[Перевод будет в комментах...].Once upon a time last year, I decided to get a second degree. Since I am not a native English speaker, I was placed in the "Writing and Cultural Diversity" class. I considered it an English Club where we read books and wrote reflection papers. My inspiration could have been Vladimir Nabokov, who switched from Russian to English once moving from Russia and assimilating into the US. Instead, I imagined myself as Viktor Pelevin, making my first attempts to write in a foreign language. Unfortunately, I immediately got a warning [and was subsequently expelled] for writing the following reflection paper on the book by Fadiman, A. (2012). "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down." The topic posed by the teacher was:.Do you believe that Hmong have a responsibility to work harder to assimilate into American culture?.This question is not a simple Yes or No question. To give a proper answer, I need to analyze the substance of this question. In the following, I will conduct a corresponding investigation going word by word through the question.."[Do] you" -- My view of myself is not of a solid monolithic being of physical, logical, and emotional composition. I am akin to a kaleidoscope consisting of different organs, concepts learned from parents and teachers, and my experiences and feelings, including psychological trauma, movies, books, and personal overthinking. Those aspects of myself constitute the pile of colorful pebbles; many are inconsistent in their shape and color, and some are contradictory, like many of my thoughts and emotions.."believe [that]" -- Suppose I further the analogy of oneself with a kaleidoscope. I am a tube with some set of pebbles [to which more can be added and some can be removed]. I do not believe -- kaleidoscope does not have a fixed pattern. To make things simpler, let's assume that a kaleidoscope is a toy in the hands of God's Child, and it is the Child that sets the rotation of the tube. Under the Child's impetus/turn, a kaleidoscope has free will, to some extent, to rearrange its pebbles and create a different pattern till the next turn. For example, as a teenager, my pebbles of male genitalia and organs of the endocrine system fell in place, and I exhibited a pattern of a young male seeking courtship to establish a family. [I fully assume responsibility for my lucky choice of the first wife.]."Hmong" -- Kaleidoscopes are made in racial batches, i.e., types of pebbles; even their number can differ between batches. But note that those differences are characteristics of averages over large nations/populations. At the same time, every batch can have truly distinct individuals.."have a responsibility" -- I suppose responsibility without a subject to whom one is responsible means "purpose" in this context, i.e., "have a responsibility" = "have a purpose." A kaleidoscope's official purpose is to make the Child happy, even if it is used to break a nut. In a broader context, one can view a human in Child's hands as a tool and/or a toy to create beauty.."to work harder" -- Life of a kaleidoscope is a vocation; one lives to breathe, eat, work, etc., to create beautiful patterns for the Child to enjoy. In other words, working is yet another way of serving the Child. Note that the light kaleidoscope is reflecting is God's light, and sometimes it heats pebbles to almost unbearable temperature risking them being smelted altogether. Here God's mercy is to allow a kaleidoscope to cool down; rest in peace, or have a good night's sleep.."to assimilate into American culture" -- It would be preposterous for me to comment further on the purpose of one's life. Note that a kaleidoscopic view of one's life allows an infinite number of alternative points of view. For example, one can consider oneself a Child at a magic show. In this case, it would be most prudent to enjoy the bedazzling show without asking the Magician too many questions about "mechanics." One may sometimes volunteer, for example, to be cut into two pieces and then miraculously "glued" back together.
